Help us warm up Chattanooga! There's at least four more days and nights of this artic chill, and before the snow hits we want to make sure the Community Kitchen has enough blankets to keep everyone covered!

To volunteer or donate clean used or new blankets:

Call Charlie Hughes at 756-4222

Our two day blanket drive was a huge sucess! We had a stack of blankets four feet tall by four feet wide by THIRTY feet long!! Hundreds and hundreds of blankets and coats--enough to Lila's car, DNA's SUV, The Duke Van, & The East Ridge Fire & Police's Suburban to the brim! Of course, no one brought a real camera since we didn't know we were going to do this when we left the house ;) but here's some cell phone pics:

Thanks so much to the East Ridge Fire & Police who kept us warm with a heater and good company, and helped us load and unload! Eric and Kenny, we couldn't have done it without you!

A huge thanks to all of our drop off sites--Ultimate Cycle, Trinity Lutheran in Hixson, Cracker Barrel in Lookout Valley, Chick-Fil-A in Ft. O, Cracker Barrel in East Ridge, and all area Walgreen's!!

Community Kitchen Appeals For Blankets, Volunteers
posted January 4, 2010 courtesy of www.chattanoogan.com

The Chattanooga Community Kitchen is operating as an emergency overnight shelter for homeless individuals and families and will continue to do so until temperatures rise.

“Because of the frigid temperatures, we began opening up at night on Christmas Eve and had 60 people needing shelter. Last night we had 104,” said Community Kitchen Director Charlie Hughes. “We are seeing more people needing shelter than ever before.”

The Community Kitchen will continue to provide overnight accommodations through the end of this week and most likely into next week as the area experiences extremely low temperatures.

Due to the overwhelming number of people seeking shelter, the Community Kitchen is in need of blankets and overnight volunteers. Contact Mr. Hughes at 756-4222 for more information.
